77 Year-Old with Dementia

Mr. N is a 77 year-old man with moderate to advanced dementia. His family contacted us, looking to move him from another city, to Portland to be closer to his family. Mr. N’s wife had recently passed away and he was living in a city with no family members nearby.

After discussing his needs at length and his daughter’s geographical location preferences, we made a fairly long list of memory care communities located within a 15 mile radius of his daughter’s home. From that list, we pared it down to communities that have private rooms available (as was their preferences), and ones that were within 6 miles of her home.

We initially toured three communities together, some were stand-alone memory care communities, and others had assisted living and/or independent living on the same campus. All of them would meet Mr. N’s needs, but his daughter felt most positive about the third community we visited. She went back with her sister to revisit that one, and they put down a deposit to hold the available room.

The staff assessed him, and Mr. N moved into that community about 3 weeks later. Unfortunately, he had a change in condition which necessitated a move after only a few months. The family again contacted us, and trusted us to find other communities which were better equipped to meet his new care needs. We had to look slightly farther away, and consider memory care communities which did not have only private rooms available. We toured three more communities and were fortunate to find exactly what we were seeking in a lovely memory care-only community 8 miles away, with an upcoming private room available. Mr. N moved into a shared room for a couple of weeks and then into a private room.

He continues to do very well in his new environment, and his family is very happy with the high level of care he is receiving from the staff. Most importantly, Mr. N is happy there!
