Alzheimer’s/Memory Care
What are Alzheimer’s or Memory Care Facilities?
Alzheimer’s or Memory Care Facilities are licensed stand-alone facilities, or special care units within a larger facility that provide intermediate care, medical, nursing and rehabilitation for residents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias. Memory Care Facilities offer a secure and controlled environment for residents who might otherwise wander out of the building. Some Memory Care Facilities are part of a larger community that may include Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care all on one campus. They often have a home-like feel with soothing color schemes, and are easy for residents to navigate. Staff members are specially trained in caring for persons with dementia. Memory Care Facilities have music, activities and routines all specially designed to help residents with dementia. Often, outside each resident’s room, there is a display of photos and information about the resident, to help remind them of who they are and of their families and their history.
Some Memory Care Facilities have respite stay programs, where a resident can come stay for a week or two. This can provide a much-needed break for the caregiver as well as give an introductory “test-drive” of how the resident might fit into the community on a permanent basis, if the family is considering that option.
Monthly rates for Memory Care are higher than for Assisted Living, and average rates begin at $4000-5000 a month. This rate includes meals, activities, and housekeeping. There are usually additional charges depending on the resident’s level of care needed. Memory Care Facilities can accommodate residents from mild dementia to very advanced Alzheimer’s, although some residents who have severe behavioral issues may need specialized care elsewhere.
