What are Skilled Nursing Facilities?

Skilled Nursing Facilities (also known as Nursing Homes or Convalescent Homes), are state-licensed facilities that provide a therapeutic environment for people who require rehabilitative care, or who can no longer live independently due to functional or cognitive impairment. Many have a long-term care section, and an intermediate-care section in addition to the short-term rehabilitation area.

Skilled Nursing Facilities provide the highest level of care for the elderly outside of a hospital setting. Skilled Nursing Facilities provide help with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living). This includes help transferring into and out of bed, and assisting with with feeding, bathing, and dressing. Skilled Nursing Facilities are different from other senior housing communities because they provide a higher level of medical care, under the supervision of a physician. A nurse or other medical professional is usually available at all times. Usually, physical and occupational therapy are available at a Skilled Nursing Facility.

Skilled Nursing Facilities often take patients who are discharged following a hospital stay. The patient will stay at the Skilled Nursing Facility for recuperation and rehabilitation before being discharged back to their home, or to an Assisted Living community or Adult Foster Home if they are unable to return home. During their stay at the Skilled Nursing Facility, they may receive physical therapy or occupational therapy as part of their rehabilitation.
